Switcharoo: Nau Lightbeam Jacket

I bought my first Marmot Driclime Windshirt in 2006. With a nylon shell and a surprisingly insulating yet thin lining, it was the perfect jacket for 45-60 degree weather. Still is. I'm on my second one now and I also use it extensively for "winter" cycling, boot camp, and pretty much all outdoor activities. You can almost always find a previous season's version on sale for around $50. In terms of functionality and versatility, it is a clear winner. Reviewers online strongly agree. The jacket is at least on its 14th version. However, as you can see above, the women's version is not flattering at all. It's boxy, and has the dreaded puffy sleeve cinched wrists combination. I love the thing. But seeing poorly dressed women/moms around the office reminds me that I don't want to knowingly emulate them.

Enter the Nau Lightbeam. At $175, it is 2-3x pricier than the Marmot Driclime. Modern, truly fitted, made of 100% recyclyed polyester, and highly packable, I favor this as a someday upgrade. Here are two pairs of shoes that I am intrigued by, but not completely won over by:

The Zuriik Shug Low Contusion (W) . Zuriik has reimagined the traditional mens oxford shoe by building a canvas upper and slapping a hard leather dress sole to it. And the laces are waxed, of course. The idea is novel, and thus worthy of attention. This shoe's shape is pretty manly, yet the decidedly feminine colors soften it up. Not many companies do a woman's oxford shoe well. It's either still quite masculine (see Frye's Erin), or way too frou-frou and "of the moment" (see Steve Madden's Trouser). The one from Marais USA is quite plain and understated, which I like, but you probably have to dress super cute and girly up top to achieve a stylistic balance. I really adore the Zuriick mens' two-tone black gray version.

Palladium boots. The first image that comes to my mind when I see these military-lite boots is a bunch of FOBs and their weirdly over-patterned and clunky attire. Yep, I grew up around Asian immigrant kids in high school and church. Some of their stuff I liked, what was copied over from Japanese youth culture, and most of it eventually became trendy. What I didn't like were the bright plaids and Palladium fold-over tongue boots. The Baggy style, as they are called, are really goofy looking. However, seeing them displayed tastefully in a lookbook like the one above does sway me a bit. I think the unfolded Pampa version could look good on a man wearing pants. Maybe. Not sure if I or any other women could really pull these off though.

Simple Carport Shoe

Living in Austin brings me in contact with some really chill dudes, guys who don't really ever dress up and who can get away with wearing faded jeans and threadbare t-shirts to work. Recently I sighted 3 pairs of these Simple Carport sneakers in one week worn by said men. Not only do they look like adult versions of little boys' shoes (cute!), they also appear to be extremely comfortable. Reviews confirm this. The woven hemp and cotton blend fabric lends an even refined air to them. And, the shoe is completely vegan, features recycled PET laces, organic cotton lining and footbed, and a sole made from recycled car tires. The next time your laid-back boyfriend needs to replace his torn up Vans, recommend these deceptive slip-ons.

Outdoor outfitter Patagonia's designs lean towards the conservative, mainstream side, e.g. fitted jackets for women, loose-legged pants for men, and blandish undergarments, while occasionally pandering towards their more stylish and old-school fans with the re-introduction of retro fleece like the boxy Classic Retro-X line. But where did the Nano Puff, introduced in 2009, come from? I recently spotted a college kid wearing this baggy sack while enjoying a burger at Hopdoddy, and thought to myself, "that is one ugly puffy pullover." And my finds (see above) while searching for images in the wild solidifies my opinion. It features elastic at the bottom and creates the illusion of muffin top, even if you are clearly fit. And the women's version has a boxy, faux-feminine cut with its way too roomy sides and arms. Yet the majority of the reviews state that it is amazingly light, warm, waterproof, and is so convenient that it stuffs into its own chest pocket. And did I mention that I have a soft spot for ugly outdoor gear? I really do. I wear my appallingly furry Mountain Hardwear Monkey fleece like the 80's never left. The collar truly does fold down in that unsightly manner, even though you want it to stand up.

Macbook Air

I'm giddy to report that this is my first post using my new 11.6" Macbook Air. It's a dreary, chilly Sunday afternoon and I'm bundled up in warm blankets on the couch as I type. My previous computer, a 20" iMac from late 2009, is a beautiful machine. Most of my photo editing was done with ease on it, and the super sharp screen was phenomenal. However, I grew weary of having to plop my bottom down on the frankly uncomfortable plastic IKEA chair for hours. And instead of getting a new computer chair, I got a new 11.6" Macbook Air at Best Buy at 15% off retail. It was quite the deal! I don't usually make brash hefty purchases, yet I haven't regretted this one. It's so very thin and light compared to my husband's relatively ponderous Macbook Pro. Sure, it only has 64 GB of storage, which means I am now using an external hard drive for all my music and photos. I rarely ever need to access all my files anyway, and to me, the weight savings and extreme portability is totally worth it. Also, using Spaces to organize my applications in separate panes is a necessity, and I find that everything is so much more organized from it. Because I shoot 35mm film, I usually develop my film and also order a CD of the scanned images. The Macbook Air has no optical drive, but Apple has made it a cinch to connect to another Apple computer and use its optical drive. Since I won't be doing much heavy lifting on this thing, like working with massive Photoshop files, this computer's specs are more than adequate. And when you open it after shutting the lid, it wakes from sleep almost instantaneously. Pretty much amazing.

Oh, and I couldn't help but fall upon this wool and leather sleeve by (previously featured) Etsy seller, ribandhull.

Brooklyn Industries Waxed Canvas Jacket

This is the first I've seen of a heritage waxed jacket for women. A collaboration between Brooklyn Industries, an young urban apparel brand, and British Millerain Co. Ltd, a company that has been producing waxed fabrics since 1980. I'm not crazy about the contemporary stand-up collar- maybe they took the hint from Filson that women prefer modern construction? The mens version looks quite rugged, and I'm so glad they extended the line to women. All in all, they are a terrific deal, as you will probably never again find a waxed canvas jacket of such nice material for under $100.

Tender Co. Type 200 Oak Bark-Tanned Belt

Not so long ago, people relied on horses to travel significant distances. Heavy leather-and-brass horse tack had to be substantial; a broken stirrup was a serious problem. So stirrups were cut from an impenetrably thick section of hide and fitted with solid cast brass hardware.

Tender Co.'s Type 200 belts are cut the same way -- from the stirrup butt, which runs along either side of the cow's spine. The leather there is 1/4 inch thick: a stack of $20 bills that high would add up to $1,160.

The leather's heft is matched by unique "bent-wire" hardware, designed by William,Tender Co.'s founder. The buckle is cast in solid brass by a UK metalsmith, using the time consuming lost-wax method. The pieces are assembled at a Somerset factory where leatherworkers cut each belt by hand, using scalpels -- the leather is too thick for the factory's electric rotary saw.

These belts are substantial in weight and in history. The leather is made at the only oak-bark tannery left in Britain; a tannery that has been turning animal skins into leather since Roman times. Much of the machinery used to de-flesh and polish the raw hides is run by water-wheel. After this cleaning, the skins are soaked in pits of oak-bark liquor for 18 months and then rubbed with a "currying" mixture of mutton tallow and fish oil. The process yields leather of deep nuance and remarkable aroma. The smell is at once animal, vegetable, and mineral; a warm fishy top note is immediately recognizable and surprisingly pleasant.

Bonus: Photo-heavy post (Part 1, Part 2) on how the good folks at Tender Co. make this superfine accessory using old-timey methods. Truly amazing craftsmanship. It is both too long for my waist and too rich for my blood, but a girl can ogle.

Klean Kanteen Reflect Series

I am quite satisfied with my Klean Kanteens, with their attractive metal bodies and responsible Chinese manufacturing. But I held off from getting them until I found them on sale at the REI outlet for $9 each. List price was just too much. And now, the company has come up with an upscale, plastic-free, paint-free bottle with a unibody bamboo and stainless steel cap. Taking a huge cue from Apple, I see. As reported in their FAQ, customers have previously complained about the stainless steel caps being squeaky. I wonder if the issue has been resolved with this new line. The press photos are really lovely, yet does anyone see the absurdity of shelling out $33 for a water vessel? It's difficult not to be distracted by the shiny mirror finish... it's so pretty....

I recently played my first disc golf game with a few friends at Pease Park a few days before the course was to be demolished. It was loads more fun that I imagined it could be, and I couldn't help noticing the hardcore players with their specialized carrying bags filled with 10+ discs. We all agreed that the nylon bags with their harnesses looked silly, and that lugging around so many discs is ridiculous. So, I did not end up winning those Blunnies. Perhaps I should release my dream of owning Australian work boots, get practical and opt for an elastic-sided boot that is less rugged, less warm... and less boot. Enter the low-cut, rubber Tretorn Strala! With its modest good looks and an attractive price range, this would be a worthy addition to most anyone's wardrobe. Forget tall rain boots, most of us don't slosh around on the farm or live in Britain. The new Strala Vinter (Swedish for winter) version features furry lining for added warmth. I had seen the Sommar style floating around earlier this year, but the white striped outsole put me off. Eddie Bauer Vintage Lace-up Chukka Boot for Women

The Red Wing Gentleman Traveler Boot, Alden Indy Boot, and Wolverine 1000 Mile Boot are damn solid vintage work boots for men. And at $200-300, they are costly. The mediocre "Vintage Shoe Company" line at Eddie Bauer doesn't seem like anything special at first glance. The only reason I bring it up is that there you can find a more affordable womens' version of the vintage work boot, the likes of which (devoid of annoying feminine frills) can be found nowhere else, save Wolverine ($$$) and maybe Frye. It's an extra 30% off today. I told myself over and over again that I would not covet heritage work boots, but the price is right!

I dug around more to see what "The Vintage Shoe Company" was all about. It does exist, and offers a $265 womens Lilly boot. Not in my price range though, sadly.

Bear Feet Womens Desert Boots

You never see desert boots for women, because they are a mens or unisex style. Well here are some that are like the floppy version of the famous Clarks, complete with crepe soles. And they are constructed by a Texas company, Bear Feet. If you check out their site, you can find mostly baby shoes that are super flexible and easily shaped to the foot, as opposed to a stiff shoe shaping the foot. 2nd best to barefoot. Kinda along the miminalist lines of the Vibram Fingers, but even better because they are handmade with American supplies, and with buckles, thread, and special leathers from Germany and Italy.

Edit: Per Amanda's comment, I trekked over to Creatures Boutique on South Congress after a half day of last minute Xmas shopping. They had so many different pairs there! It is under the name Dimovi because the daughter of the Bear Feet family, who resides in Austin, branched off into her own line. I tried on a 39, a size smaller than I usually fit, and they slipped on like a sweetly worn leather sock. (Or as they jokingly called it there, a "foot condom"). The bronze leather was very pliable already, and the thin crepe sole allows you feel the ground underneath. A black crepe sole was available, as well as a mens's version. All the womens' models had a single set of rhinestone glued to side of the boots (on the tip of the flap), a pink/blue/purple strip of leather at the heel, and matching laces. Because I prefer unfeminized things in general, I decided to get a custom pair made with no rhinestones or girly colored accents. It'll be ready in 2-4 weeks! The only thing is that last night I bid on a pair of used Blundstone 500s on Ebay, and I'm still the highest bidder. So I might end up with two pairs of brown boots. I'm not complaining...

Winter Boots, or Something

Not that I need them, but ever since I laid eyes the beautifully flecked knee socks at American Apparel today in the Drag store (not online!), I've been on the hunt for affordable cold weather boots to pair with it. Over here in Texas, winter wardrobes are dictated by style, not so much by necessity. It's also been about 6 months since I've gone shopping... which doesn't help things. OK let's go!

To the best of my knowledge, L.L. Bean was responsible for the original Maine hunting boot. I was vaguely aware of that, yet my main association with this style of boot is with Ralph Lauren and their faux rugged version's popularity in the hip hop culture. I found a kickass red rubber Eddie Bauer pair on Ebay, and although they are magically in my size, I've purchased ill-fitting shoes on Ebay too many times. And the New England look isn't really part of my style inclination, as much as I love Foster Huntington's blog. Somebody should buy these!!

What about rain boots? They're relatively cheap for a lot of boot. It's messed up that sellers can command $100+ for rain boots though, after they became a flowery fashion accessory. With the exception of legitimate European Wellington makers, such as Hunter (they offer cute socks!) and Aigle, of course. Baffin is a major Canadian producer of boots, and these industrial rubber boots are not only under $40, they are hiding a maple leaf stamped on the heel. Sneaky lads.

Engineer/harness boots. I've been intrigued by these motorcycle boots for a few years now, and never pulled the trigger because they are just too damn tough for me. With the light walking that I do, I simply would not be able to wear them out. As with any technical clothing, I believe that you should get something that fits your functions, and doesn't go way beyond into the land of needless excess. That way you don't look like a tool, haha. These Red Wing Boots in black are drop dead sexy, so that's why they are on this list.

Field Notebooks

One thing I have pretty much stopped doing is writing- with a pen on paper. Even though in college, laptops were the notebooks of choice, I still preferred to handwrite all my notes. Fast forward a few years where the computer dominates my work life, free time, and the hubby is trying to ease the Kindle under my radar. I have 5 books of diaries, yet my latest one has sporadic entries, as Evernote replaced it for a period of months. So, why write things down anymore, when you can type, save, backup, manipulate, and edit stuff on a screen? I don't know the answer to that question. Yet I get to ask myself, as today, by virtue of creating a new Gowalla location, I randomly won a subscription to the Field Notes Colors limited edition notebooks. (Checking in or creating new places is sort of a pointless activity, but I was sitting in the waiting room at the doctor's and had nothing better to do.) And boy are these notebooks lovely, as the line "explores new papers, printing processes, and colors, sometimes adding special packaging and other fringe benefits." I await the first shipment with excitement and smidgen of anxiety over what to do with them! Not a proponent of accumulating pretty objects that just collect dust.

Field Notes are inspired by the agricultural notebooks of the past century, yet they are more like a modern, immaculately designed, urban version of their grandparents. For memo books that can stand to be outside, check out Rite in the Rain. They are definitely not as sleek as Field Notes, but professionals use them (see Cool Tools). Also consider other military notebooks, such as the Department of Defense bound log books. ACL has a recent write-up on them, and a hearty discussion in the comments section on the military tactical equipment and clothing as fashion statements.

Outlier Merino Pullover

And speaking of fabrics you can never have enough of, how about merino wool, that fine animal product that magically keeps you dry when you perspire, breathes fabulously in warm weather, and keeps you toasty in cold weather. Introducing the $180 sweatshirt! As put off I am by the prices Outlier commands, I believe that their products are worth every penny, if the purpose of your wardrobe is quality over quantity. The value of each piece easily overtakes that of the designer crap found in high-end department stores, as Outlier sells directly to the customer with minimal mark up (see FAQ). Take a look at their Philosophy page; how amazing that a group of people with zero background in garment construction took their passion for well-made technical clothing and sustainability, did a bunch of research, and came back with some really good stuff.

Back to the pullover/ sweatshirt, I am not sold on the aesthetics of the ribbed fabric on the sides, but it apparently allows more movement. The black version is much more plain and stealth, as it the ribbed fabric is not as apparent. This wool style is intriguing to me, as I have not seen a similar product made by other technical wool clothing companies. Even Icebreaker, arguably the most modern and European of them all, does not have a sweatshirt or even sweater-like product. Their thicker knit tops are mostly body-hugging. Ibex, who makes wool cycling apparel, carries a somewhat similar fitted long-sleeve top. With its more classic cozy fit, the Outlier Merino Pullover has the best chance of becoming a winter lounge favorite, as well as performing double duty when you ride.

I fawn from a distance, but have no intentions of purchasing, as the XS in mens will still be too roomy. I am interested in what plans they have for extending their womens' line... might as well give them a holler!

It's a great vegan alternative to leather that ages in its own special way, gaining beausage. The man behind these thoughtfully designed and constructed bags at Zugster, Adam Alpern (Flickr), is man who values innovation. I used to follow him on Google Reader when I was still using that app, and he always posted sometimes technical, always informative reads. And really, how could you not admire a dude who has mastered the art of sewing?

Mundane is the New Exciting

OK, what is with this: I'm seeing versions of clothing that I could get from Target and Dillards posted in the freshest fashion blogs and online shops. Like the Champion sweatshirt and the 90's ubiquitous Polo long-sleeved polo shirt above. It was only a matter of time before ordinary, easy to come by articles of clothing were co-opted by the industry tastemakers and praised as fashion forward. The maddening (or confusing) thing is that the 45 year old dads with their old Champions and geeks who have kept the same polo shirts for 10 years are exempt from turning into style icons overnight. Only if you possess the uber-specific, time-sensitive cultural capital (see NYT essay on the sociology behind hipsterdom) to distinguish between oblivious and deliberate association with certain products can you exploit this tiresome trend. I'll stop now because I don't want to get all theoretical or point any fingers here. As much as I admire good clothing, I believe that you should wear what you like with pride, not look down on people who don't give a shit, and refrain from placing people in categories. Don't get sucked into stealthy forms of style that are fueled by a belief that your ever evolving taste is superior.

Barbour Beacon Heritage Tartan Blouson

Hot out of the garment factories is the Spring 2011 Barbour Beacon Heritage by Japanese designer Tokohito Yoshida. The details aren't that important. It's just another example of the Japanese (nobody takes style more seriously) remaking a Western classic brand into something more modern, wearable, and with the propensity to be a future classic. I, for one, love the particular blouson (aka blouse jacket) above. You know it's fully functional and can stand up to the worst beating, while looking ever so refined doing it. I definitely recommend this line for consumers who like the style sensitivities of Nau products, but opt for a more traditional feel.

Luna Sport Cycling Jersey

Cycling clothes are egregiously overpriced, as I soon discovered after performing a Google shopping search for a jersey. Expect to pay above $50 for a modern synthetic one and over $100 for a wool one. This is baffling to me, as you can get synthetic workout tops on sale for less than $20; is it the fancy stitched back pockets that you pay so dearly for? Who knows. Anyways, I found this tasteful plain jersey by Luna on sale at Sierra Trading Post. It doesn't make you out to be a moving advertisement, with just 3 small stitched yellow logo patches (2-front, 1-back). I like Clif Bars better than Luna Bars, but the latter company churns out some solid women's cycling clothing. The XS is a wee bit too tight on me, but less drag, right? As I may have mentioned before, I've been going on Monday Night Rides with whomever is available, going 25-30 miles in and around town. They've really been boosting my aerobic endurance, as I have given up my hatred for hills and and am coming to accept (if not enjoy) them. At 54 degrees, tonight marked the first chilly ride. It also offered some new lessons. I layered up with an Under Armour polyester base shirt, an American Apparel (55% cotton, 50% polyester), a jersey knit scarf, and my Marmot windshirt(100% polyester). Bottoms consisted of cheapo long black cotton leggings from Forever 21, AA poplin shorts on top for modesty, and SOS North Carolina cycling socks. No wool yet, as I am not too eager to provide more luxurious munchies for our resident moths. I might try wool blends first. The scarf was a lifesaver, as I flipped it over my mouth and nose because the cold air was reviving my cough. I ended up only unzipping my jacket a few inches after heart-pounding climbs, never overheating.

Here's the route Tyler, Stephen, and I took. 15 minutes in, I noticed that my handlebars were noticeably tilted to the left. My bike fell over while I was waiting for my ride partners at Quacks, and apparently the stem was not bolted on tight enough. It was folly to not bring my newly acquired (and effing awesome) Leyzne multi-tool, as I was running out of space in my bento box. Always pack the multi-tool! And I gotta get a handlebar bag or remember to wear my jersey. I wasn't able to bring a pair of gloves and my keys, phone, wallet and Clif bar in the bento box made a ruckus on bumpy surfaces. (And, yes, that is a Nitto Technomic protruding a whopping 14 cms above my headtube- it won't go down any lower! As the 50cm frame is a bit small for me, it works. Just don't wanna look like a tool.)

In hindsight, I am happy that I got rid of my large, wide English saddlebag. Only the smallest seat bag (the one I found off Craigslist is Banjo Brothers Mini) won't get in the way of my thighs. To me, the balance of carrying just enough stuff is a challenge to figure out in the beginning. I want to have a rear rack for strapping on a jacket or extra layers that I get rid of during the course of riding, but if I rarely use it, that's 1 or 2 lbs of extra weight I'm hauling up a hill.

Other additions that would have helped: seamless undies (!), not wearing the shorts on top (extra fabric and seams really rub after 10 miles), a warm cap to put under my helmet, plastic toe-clips that actually fit, bar-end shifters. Articles of clothing that did not reek afterwards: thermal shirt, leggings, jacket, scarf. Not bad at all. The Under Armour shirt was pretty cold on my skin when I stopped- it's definitely part of their "heat gear" collection.

It's pretty neat to put my setup to the test and figure out better ways of dressing. I'm trying to "deserve" my gear (aka use it frequently), which will help me decide what is truly useful and what is vanity. This excellent bike touring post reminded me that it's not all about the technical gear, it's about the experience and if you are having fun. Ah, I'm gonna be sore tomorrow for workout. Now that I have binged on chocolate foods (hot cocoa, fudge mint cookies), I feel an early bedtime coming on...

Patagonia Catalog Photography

As I mentioned before, I adore and respect the photography in Patagonia catalogs. I feel that they represent some of the best of extreme adventure photography. In my newest Patagonia Holiday 2010 catalog, I noticed that some of the photos were from years past, some very apparently vintage. In the front cover in small print, it announces the new book, Unexpected: 30 Years of Patagonia Catalog Photography ("to order online, search classic photos at patagonia.com" - lol). Our coffee table is much to tiny to showcase books, but if it were more sizable, this would be a worthy contender.

And I apologize for awkward phrases used to describe the trend, as I don't care to pay that much attention to the media's and bloggers' word choice.

Having grown up in Texas, I've never been bitten badly by the preppy/ Ivy League bug. For regional wear, like Wrangler jeans and Justin cowboy boot, you had to look in small, isolated towns. I owned the occasional Lacoste and Polo polo shirt, but even that was more determined by European tastes and the selection at Dillard's. I guess it's not something you really get into unless you are from New England. Even when watching The Social Network (great movie), I found myself fascinated by the almost severe ivy attire of the Winklevoss twins in each of their scenes. Their v-neck sweaters, letter jackets, striped ties, and jerseys were an immaculate blend of the proper, the timeless and the elite. Speaking of the Japanese, they have always gotten the historical and aesthetic value of American classicwear. Perhaps because it is so foreign? Traditional American workwear and outdoor clothing establishments, such as Pendleton Woolen Mills, Johnson Woolen Mills (see article), Levis, Filson, Patagonia, Sierra Designs, Danner, Clarks, Dickies, Carhartt, Champion, and many others have all experienced relatively massive success and appreciation in Japan. Recent slideshow example: Best of Vest. Evidence of this is also shown by the fact that on the companies' Japanese website (linked above), they offer a wider range of specially designed premium pieces that can't be found in the Western hemisphere.

When I traveled to Osaka in the summer of 2006, I was struck by how some of the clothing seemed to more American than what Americans actually wear. And whenever my relatives from Hong Kong visit (Japan serves as sole style inspiration for all first-world Asian countries), they beg us to drive them to outlet malls and Ross/Marshall for them to stock up on what seems like boring, throwaway American-made basics. I am not old enough and have not had enough exposure to Japanese youth culture to make a statement on whether this mad obsession of theirs stick around for more than a handful of years. I hope it will, for the sake of small, family-owned American businesses. I also do not have an opinion about it, and I waver back and forth between apathy (materialism is bad!), admiration (they really know their stuff!) and disgust (those posers). Happily, existing stateside fans of these brands have been able to come out of the woodwork, mostly to discuss with new converts to the current heritage trend.

One important site on the history of outdoor gear is Bruce Jonson's OregonPhotos.com. I can only compare it to Sheldon Brown's site in that it is equally as passionate about the subject matter, but much less extensive and organized. It hosts more information that you'll probably ever want to know about early outdoor brands and their evolution. For me, I was pleased to find out confirmation that my down Moonstone sleeping bag was manufactured by a solid company (albeit shut down without explanation), that Patagonia was founded on a love for surfing, and that Rivendell Mountain Works is a brand. Here is a lengthy interview of Mr. Jonson on Our Culture, as he discusses the origins of his low-budget site and his views of the trend, the DIY outdoor culture, and the environment.

Vintage daypacks have been popular with the streetwear crowd (and of course, Japan) for a few years now, see Jake Davis' post for a summary on the current offerings. As someone who hauled most of her school books in a forest green, leather-bottomed JanSport Classic backpack, I couldn't bring myself to embrace this trend, as I felt too close to it. Granted, most of these models are from the 70's, a decade before my birth, and it seemed inevitable that a rejection of modern synthetic-made outdoor gear would lead to an examination and geeking out of its pioneering roots and first designs.

I am backwards, as I love outdoor gear and only want to love being in the outdoors. I chalk it up to my safe, indoor-loving suburban upbringing and genes; that I have little appetite for adventure, only the desire for the appetite. Living in Austin, I've gone on a fair share of overnight camping trips and a single backpacking trip, and thanks to the other Rivendell, aim go bike camping with my Bridgestone RB-3 sometime. I have moderately few words to report about how much of this equipment performs (which means I probably could not snag a job at Patagonia even as a bottom-rung customer service rep). It's just beautiful and rugged and embodies the sort of lifestyle and attitude so glaringly absent from modern, technology-filled life.

One specific bag I want to highlight is the Rivendell Mountain Works Mariposa Summit Pack. Nearly identical to the original design in 1977, it cost less than the average imported technical pack you can find in REI, yet is constructed in the US, literally in a remote cottage. Mind boggling!

Winter Workout

There is a true nip in the air, and boot camp carries on. This week brought out some revealing running tights (actually leggings), which are quite striking when worn alone as a bottom. Great for displaying muscle tone! "Experts" recommend that when engaging in cold weather activity, dress in layers. Start with a moisture-wicking base, add an insulated layer, and then finish with a wind and rain resistant shell. I'm in the market for a base layer set. My first urge is to go for wool, as it is making a comeback as a natural material far superior to synthetics, especially in releasing stink and staying toasty even when wet. However, expect to pay $50 and up for a single piece, and this girl is on a budget. I want to make the jump, but not until I commit to getting the most use out of it. So, I go embark on one of my favorite Internet activities, which is to leisurely scour outdoor gear websites for deals. That stuff is the paragon of practical-wear.... (I will say though, that Sierra Trading Post is usually too much for me to handle, with their only sometimes useful product categories. I look there for Smartwool socks.)

Let me start by saying that I am not a huge fan of toggle coats or slim-fit outerwear for women. Yet this simple duffle coat jumped out at me and snuggled its way onto my wishlist. The brushed gray wool is so lovely, reminding me of the stuff of the Birkenstock Davos Clog and byrdandbelle's felt cases. The jute rope is a nice touch, and the roomy fit is classy, but not masculine. It truly is my definition of the perfect cut for a short winter coat. Funny enough, both Fidelity and Gerald and Stewart have very lo-fi websites, adding some enticing mystery to the collaboration. See Commerce with a Conscience's post on the men's long version.

Jury-rigged: Bike Helmet Headlamp

Now that I've been going on 20+ mile bike rides on Monday evenings, my Planet Bike Spok light set doesn't really cut it... it meaning the vast darkness that arrives after 7 PM. The front LEDs keep me visible to oncoming traffic, but I have to avoid poorly lit streets. One black pothole and me loosening my grip on the handlebars and down I would go. I've read good reviews of Planet Bike's powerful 2 Watt Blaze headlight, but at $60, it's going to have to wait. I'm currently trying to find a way to use my camping headlamp, the Petzl Zipka. As you can see above, this is attempt one. The light rest on the middle front vent, and the backpiece is wedged out one of the side back vents. Both parts are "secured" with black electrical tape. I will take this out on a ride tonight and see how well it works. If it rattles or doesn't stay put, I may have to try to mold a mounting case out of Sugru and zip tie that to the helmet.

Anorak Pullover

Ah, the half-zip pullover. Not nearly as versatile as a jacket, yet having a distinctive boxy style. Do you remember the block-colored Gap anoraks with stuff sacks that were all the rage in the 90's? You could find an entire collection of them lining a store wall. I also managed to find a khaki anorak with 3 oversized bone buttons and a long front pocket at Eddie Bauer about 10 years ago. I still miss that thing, even though it engulfed my small frame. I'm also waiting for anoraks to come back and replace windbreakers and cardigans. In the meantime, here are some acceptable starts.

Lands' End Canvas Women's Ultralight Anorak. The "Canvas" line is Lands' End response to the L.L. Bean Signature Line and a late, mass-targeted entry to the Americana market (or something like that). This anorak is modern slim-fit, nylon, and comes in 3 insipid colors. Imported $22.99

Opening Ceremony Oversized Anorak. This piece, in all its wrinkly nylon-cotton glory, looks like it was fished out of a 40-year old dad's closet. I get it- it's supposed to be preppy! And it is, albeit in an unmistakably 80's way. Sold out.

Lees Army Store Hooded Anorak. Worn by the US Army when the going gets windy and damp. Treated with Quarnel ("Quartermaster Repellent"), the military's version of DWR; it repels liquid while maintaining breathability. The small hood looks out of proportion to the width of the body; this is for layering purposes. (I couldn't seem to find this jacket on a US website.) £24.95

Bicycling in style has seen a momentous resurgence here in the US. While urban cyclists in Europe have probably never stopped being classy, we have select brands like Rapha and Outlier here to dress us up (and make us broke). They are probably going along with the assumption that most bike commuters hold: that it is perfectly alright to shell out for premium bike parts and accessories since you are saving so much by not driving or owning a car. This week, Outlier had the gall to introduce a semi-stretchy wool peacoat the price of an iPad. It gets me riled up and I almost can't take so much sartorial brilliance on a sweaty cyclist! At least I can find some consolation in the fact that I don't live in New York and have to be around so many well-dressed lads, unlike this poor woman.

Winter Cycling Caps

Regarding bicycling, is it the gear or the rider? I have to remind myself often that all my components and parts are good enough and it's up to me to push harder and go further. However, some gear really does enable you to stay on your bike longer. One accessory that sets the dedicated cyclist apart from the seasonal one is the winter cycling cap. I have a soft spot for the ones with ear flaps. It's never too chilly to ride, especially in Texas!

Canon Rebel G Camera

How did I fall upon my film camera for life? A photography whim, a Craigslist search, a bit of lens research, and $130. The used body was $30, and the new "plastic fantastic" 50mm fixed lens was $99. Absolute best combination for the amateur film photographer, IMHO. I recommend this to all of my interested friends. The Canon Rebel G was released in the late 90's, and is an entry-level, all-plastic model. Sure, you can read Ken Rockwell all day long, but at the end of the day, those are only the detailed opinions of one man, and you have to go with what feels best in your hands. I'm sticking to this because I don't agree with high camera rental prices, and I also shy away from spending wads of cash on trying out tons of cameras. You're not going to get a lighter or more compact setup in the DSLR world. (If you want digital, I highly recommend going Micro 4/3, the Panasonic Lumix DMC-GF1. The image quality is spectacular, and you also get DoF.)

I don't claim to be a pro at shooting, as I educated myself on the basics of photography, and then let my equipment do most of the tough work for me. The only film I use is Kodak Gold 100, for minimal grain and those warm, deep film tones that are glaringly absent from digital photos. The lens is really fantastic and adequate for most shooting. The 1.8 f-stop means that the lens opening is wide enough for all but the duskiest shots. An upgrade to to f1.4 will cost you ~$300. I've taken this camera everywhere for the past two years. I set it to autofocus and aperture priority and I can capture each shot with ease and minimal fiddling. And as with most on-camera flash, don't use it.

Gramicci Original G Pant

Ever seen I first laid eyes on these climbing pants at the local REI during my previous camping gear and outerwear craze, I haven't been able to forget about them. They feature an iconic 80's style with the tapered legs, bunched waistband + built-in nylon belt, and no-nonsense cotton fabric that wears impeccably, similar to a loved leather jacket. The cut particularly mirrors the current trend of not too slim, not too baggy, updated classic cut in mens casual pants, but it's mere coincidence. They still look stylin' even 20+ years after they were introduced and gained a cult status. Showcased here is the discontinued Original G Reverse Leg Pant. Apparently the quality of the brand has gone down significantly, as evidenced by reviewers older and wiser than I. It's an oft heard story of dissatisfied customers due to most clothing companies moving manufacturing overseas. Aside from principle, it only slightly bothers me as I do not climb mountains and boulders. I could easily see these in paired with vintage wafflestompers and a nice plaid shirt. Men, pull on pair of these and watch me swoon!

Lately, J. Crew's womens clothing has stopped sucking so bad and consists of more than sparkly trinkets, wool blend cardigans, printed long t-shirts, and hackneyed khaki crap. I applaud them for actually trying to stay ahead of the curve and taking a needed cue from menswear. So much so that I decided to enter their store again, on the hunt for the relaxed Broken-in Boyfriend Chino. (After 5 months of sweltering heat and nonstop short-donning, when it dropped down to the high 70's last week, I dug out a pair of skinny jeans and pulled them on. Not only did I rip a belt loop trying to stuff my legs in, I spent the rest of the day feeling very suffocated. Are skinny jeans the corset of the 2000s? I need pants that let me move, please.) I did not find them, but spotted a deliciously rust+mustard wash of the Waverly Chino. It was the deep color that attracted my attention (listed as OTR on the tag- any idea?), a color not unlike some of the darker offerings of American Eagle and A&F baggy khaki shorts circa 2000. They were a wardrobe staple of the popular "preppies" through all of high school- remember? It was bold, not the usual tempered down khaki, nearly ecru, tint of women's khakis. The straight leg cut gave no hint of being a feminine cut, and with rolled up legs, it was the perfect item for the Americana-loving girl looking for bottoms. J. Crew calls it their "skinniest chino ever," yet it is nearly the opposite of the skinny jean, and could easily be construed as androgynous if not worn with the recommended heel and fitted top. Be like the boys; go with some Clarks Originals.

I do not claim to know much at all about military apparel (no otaku here). I'm currently reading William Gibson's Pattern Recognition and getting my first taste of that obsession. Generally, I shy away from US military-inspired garb, mainly because the solid colors are drab and the camo prints are so loud, and most feminized versions are too fitted. However, these super-functional designs hold a permanent spot as one of the fashion industry's most drawn-on inspiration. I really love the faded jacket from A.P.C. paired with sweatshorts and a simple blouse, but it's ~$300; a more affordable, reproduction M-65 by Alpha Industries is shown below. That company has a neat history: formerly a military clothing contractor, they now produce for the commercial fashion industry. Talk about cred! Lindsey Weir from Freaks and Geeks (awesome show) was rarely seen without her beloved, tired field jacket on- that secret fashion fiend!

Beckel Canvas Bags

On a recent trip to Portland, we accidentally drove past the Beckel Canvas store on the way back from a tasty Scandinavian brunch at Broder. Before we left town, I swung by again and picked up a Necessary Bag in red (to X-mas-ize my green War Bag, of course!). Previously they had only used un-dyed canvas and olive drab canvas, so the bright red is an exciting new option. The storefront was about 1/3 of the building; the rest of it was taken up by workstations, long tables, logs of fabric, and a few employees hard at work. No assembly line here; each employee makes a bag from start to finish. I chatted with Kathy Beckel, and we discussed how the Americana trend has resulted in an explosion of new orders in the past 2 years. I'm happy to hear that! I try to recommend these bags to everyone I know, as they are sturdy as heck, amazingly affordable, and made in the US.

I've liked the look of the Blundstone ("Blunnies") 500 boots for a while now. They are pull-up leather boots with elastic-banded sides, and a thick, cushy polyurethane sole. They are an Australian staple, even gracing the front cover of Merge Records story book. People love their worn-in Blunnies (just do a Flickr search), yet as I was talking to my local bike mechanic (1st image) about his new pair, he commented that they only last about 2 years for him, and that they used to be made in Australia and now the tag says they are made in Vietnam. I found similar remarks on lower quality and no drop in the $150 price tag on review sites. After scouring around, I fell upon Rossi Boots, an Australian bootmaking company that still makes their locally. The Endura 303 is looks nearly identical to the Blundstone 500, and costs about the same. I think these would make a great winter boot; I could probably even get away with wearing these with a skirt and tights! The only trick about these is that unlike Blundstones, which you can get at Whole Earth here, probably aren't stocked anywhere within try-on distance, so beware of sizing issues when purchasing online.

Flannel-lined pants

The first version I ever saw of these was in 8th grade or so, in an L.L. Bean catalog, the jeans. (We got sent these to our house for years after I succumbed to a humongous monogrammed backpack of theirs to replace my leather-bottomed Jansport.) They didn't look glamorous back then, and they certainly haven't aged well since then. The women's, especially, scream "mom" and "frumptastic." Though Texas will probably only put out 2-3 days chilly enough to warrant these pants, I still demand that a proper and modern kind of flannel-lined pants for women be made. I read somewhere that J. Crew offers these as chinos for men each winter- they look nice don't they? The women's looks a bit more Gap-py, with oddly summery color choices. J. Crew, now that you have boy plaid shirts for women, please make a pair of these with an appropriately dark pant fabric and a classic plaid lining.

Filson's Tin Cloth Field jacket is heavy (duty) apparel. When I had the chance to try it on at the Portland store, it felt like I was wearing 5 pounds worth of wet canvas. The material is super oiled, super water repellent. Here's a photo of the women's XS engulfing me. Too bad. Here's to them making a kids line, since, you know, dads like to take their sons out hunting and fishing. I really can't imagine when I'd ever be able to fully utilize a jacket like this, but it makes me happy that it exists anyhow. Filson's tagline? "Might as well have the best."

Here's a high quality wool sweater to keep for life. The marl knit is my absolute favorite type of knit, as it creates some visually appealing texture without being too busy. Homemade Laundry Soap

Inspired by the Amish's view of technology (article), I ordered a Lehman's catalog. I leafed through it while waiting for my sick brother at the clinic- it's filled with so many amazing old tools, machines, and natural products. As much as I would like to try, I will probably not be purchasing the cast iron meat grinder, grain mill, olive lamps, wood-burning stove ... ever. Unless, of course, I get around to building my apocalypse, off-the-grid cabin later on. One of the items in the catalog is a homemade laundry soap starter set. The ingredients are Arm & Hammer baking soda, Borax, and Fels Naptha, all old-school cleaning solutions. The copy claims that each load will cost you less than 6 cents; it's about 7 cents with shipping and handling. I pay about 15 cents per load using my Seventh Generation 2x detergent. It seems to add up over time, so I may try to make my own next time. A frugal lifestyle blog I read had a post in 2008 about this, where each load comes out to about 2 cents. Go figure.

Here is a good looking, forest green-laced hiking boot in the fashion of the 1970s wafflestomper. It is made by Rogue, a South African outdoor footwear company. Among with other choice products, it is sold in the purposely small online shop of Ray Mears, renowned bushcraft and survival expert. Although this style isn't the exact pair that is often "seen on the feet of Ray and the Woodlore outdoor team," (that title belongs to the hybridish Desert boot), I definitely prefer this model. Smithy's Bench

Having tried my hand at making simple wood furniture (two coffee tables), I can say that the hobby is probably too much work for the average crafty person to continue without a work shed. I spent about $60 on the first one, because I had to buy the initial tools, and then $20 on materials for the second. The issue with most handmade furniture is that it is too pricey to justify. This outdoor bench is shockingly affordable because it a log sawed in half sitting on two legs, and it is unfinished, which makes for some great patina as it ages. Some of the most truly beautiful, natural wood products have come out of the US's sparsely populated northernmost states. Like the coasters and cutting boards I recently ordered from Minnesota's Boards by Joel.

Feetbelts

I've been using MKS metal toe clips on my bike pedals for two years now, and wearing my Vans Authentics, I find that the rigid prongs pinch my toes. In comes Feetbelts, a foot strap made from recycled seatbelts. They are about the same price as the venerable Power Grips, but they are constructed by a couple of bike dudes in Austin's backyard, San Marcos. With their bold graphics and poppy colors, they definitely stand out. Too bad they're all sold out online, so check with your LBS, Texan riders.

Update: After 2 weeks of using these, I can say I am sorely disappointed. The belts are simply too floppy to be of good use. If I happen to step on the strap while I'm trying to get my foot it, it's all over, until the next light. The strap flattens to the side of the pedal and cannot be coaxed to rise up. According to the Feetbelts site, version 2 has reinforced straps for stiffness. All I can think is, great, thanks for selling the last of your original stock to local bike shops. I'm going to have to get some foam sheets and make my own reinforcements. Furthermore, because my shoes have rubber soles, they sometimes gets stuck when I try to pull out to put my feet on the ground. In a few instances, I have almost fallen sideways, feet still in the straps. It's almost enough to make me go clipless. Bleh!

Soma Rush Special Edition

Special editions tend to blip louder on my radar. Most of the time the makers have added a handful of bells and whistles. Unnecessary, yes, but pretty, oh yes. This is the special edition of Soma Fabrication's track frame, the Rush. I have never been a fan of Soma's uninspired lettering, but this vintage font looks solidly terrific. See the same on this unreleased Rivendell frame collaboration. I am not feeling the new "Rush" logo too much. Yet the nicely designed headbadge is a unique and very attractive touch. Who knew you could get away with a red and green color combo without being Christmassy? Now that the mad heyday of riding minimalist, super modern fixed gear track bikes is tapering off and being replaced by love for classic steel road and randonneuring bikes, Soma has made a smart move in adding traditional touches to their frames, including lugs. Sharp looks aside, what is stopping me from adding this to my wish list is the fact that it has "aggressive track geometry," which means speed > comfort, and it doesn't have bosses for a water bottle mount. I'm all for minimalistic good looks, unless they get in the way of practical considerations. Still, it is an item of beauty.

As a city rider who has had very bad luck with saddlebags (it dropped my wallet!) and despises the sluggish feeling of a bike weighed down by stuff, I admire this waterproofed cotton burrito wrap. For a few seconds I pondered over making my own, but the description is correct: "you can't make it for yourself this cheap." If you wanted to make a couple, Campmor sells similar waterproof canvas by the yard. Also here is a fancier version with pockets and patterns costing almost 10x more.

Korin Fruit Knife

I have an unhealthy obsession with knives. This coupled with a general ignorance about their various styles and materials doesn't really help me in the kitchen. After reading forum comments on the uber-popular Shun knives (thinking about replacing my cheap, dull Cuisinart paring knife), I found myself on the Korin website. I educated myself by skimming the linked articles on the Learn tab, found out that their 15% off sale was going on until July 31, and drooled over the fairly affordable $40-60 offerings until I came across this fruit knife. It's easily 1/10 of the price of the next cheapest knife up. I'll wager a guess that this is because it is probably not lovingly handmade by an expert craftsman, and because the blade is mere stainless steel. It won't hold an edge as long as a blade with more carbon, so it needs more frequent sharpening, but it also won't rust. I also like that it has a more traditional Japanese look, with the simple cylindrical wooden handle. This would make a great picnic/ outdoors knife, with its convenient sheath, and would probably rival similarly priced plastic handled paring knives.

DIY Huaraches

This is my Summer 2010 sandal, the huarache. I really wanted my classic Vibram FiveFingers to bear that title, but after a few months in warmer weather, the stench they emitted after each wear was too foul. I found that soaking them in water and baking soda helped, but I wasn't about to wash my main shoes everyday. Barefoot Ted sells a Vibram-sole huarache kit in his online shop at a very reasonable price. I bought from him, and substituted red polypropylene rope ($3 at Walgreens) for the leather laces. It was a small concession because polypropylene is a petroleum product, but I was skeptical about the pliability of the leather. According to a friend who also completed this project, the leather laces do work for this tie-style, they just take longer to break in. These shoes are designed after the minimal footwear of the Tarahumara runner-people of Mexico. Urban runners who want that barefoot feel will don these for a thin layer of protection against potentially dangerous surfaces. I'm no runner, but I do enjoy the easy slip-on slip-off aspect of these stink-free shoes, and can happily add handmade shoes to my short list of craft accomplishments.

August 2010 edit: The poly rope knot wore through in a couple of months. I restrung the sandals with the original leather straps (yes, they get pliable) and they have been going strong ever since.

Schrade Barlow and Opinel Knife

The barlow is a classic American pocket knife style. The handle on this austere model is made of plastic, but you can find a slew of more expensive non-plastic options and made in USA ones elsewhere online. I stumbled upon this item while browsing the Lehman's online catalog, which only stocks old-fashioned non-electric merchandise. According to their about page, they sell to "missionaries and doctors working in developing countries; homesteaders and environmentalists living in remote areas; people with unreliable electricity living on islands and mountains; second home owners, hunters, fishers and cabin dwellers; the 'chronically nostalgic,' and even Hollywood set designers looking for historically accurate period pieces."

A step up from the barlow in price and rusticity is the French Opinel knife. The Kitchn names the #6 as a choice pick for picnics. The carbon blade keeps a sharper edge, but needs to be wiped dry immediately after use. The stainless steel blade grows duller faster, but requires no special maintenance.

Archival Clothing Musette

This musette is one offering in the fairly new line of bags produced by Archival Clothing. It is constructed from durable Waxwear waxed cotton. It comes in tan, yellow and navy- featured here is navy, my pick. More details here. I really don't need another shoulder bag, as my vintage Coach Ebay-find satchel serves me extremely well. However, I support that blog and want to test this out as a bicycle accessory. Cyclists traditionally used thin cotton musettes as feed bags during long races. If it comes down to choosing between a bag attached to the bike (such as this pretty Sackville SaddleSack) and a shoulder bag, I will choose the latter, since I go on short errands and am frequently hopping on and off. This bag truly embodies the AC ideal: classic, relatively unadorned, and maximum functionality.

Swedish Officers Blanket

I've had my eye on a MacAusland's Woolen Mills blanket (lap size) for some time now, but despite their amazingly low prices, I suspect that international shipping might make it slightly less of a good deal. The Hudson Bay Company point blanket is similarly appealing, but you kind of look like a tool with such a ratty old thing in your living room, assuming you cannot afford a $300-$500 new one. Then I stumbled across this Swedish Officers Blanket. Usually military blankets are scratchy and not the softest blankets you can find, but the striking crown pattern caught my eye. This gray/eggshell color combo is available on this military surplus site. You can come across some great finds browsing around those sites. The giant Sierra Trading Post also carries a tanner one. Though it may be 95 degrees outside, we always appreciate a blanket to snuggle with while lounging on the couch in the evening.

This is the epitome of the perfect leather satchel, in my humble opinion. I remembering coming across the Billykirk website a few years ago and marveling at this bag. At the time, I was looking for a map case and found nothing at Ebay and military surplus shops. The leather and stitching is top notch, and you can expect it to improve with usage and age. And it fits the iPad! They justify each other's existence, yea? Check out Billykirk's history in the About section. Hello! It's Fern. I've always had a penchant for classic clothing and accessories. I managed to get through childhood wearing very few dresses, skirts and dress shoes. In junior high, I received a Muji canvas tote with leather handles from my aunt in Japan. The simplicity and ruggedness of it amazed me, and it quickly became my favorite bag. When shopping at the limited selection that is the mall, I always wished the boys and mens selection at Gap fit me, especially the plain knit sweaters. My brother was 5 years younger, and I would borrow an old blazer or oxford shirt from his closet on occasion. (The only thing that taught me was that boys' clothing is not flattering on women- too boxy.) In high school, while the girls were wearing boot cut jeans and the guys baggy cargo pants, I snagged a pair of slim, tapered cotton dress pants at Banana Republic and wore them all the time with pride. Needless to say, I was very relieved when skinny jeans later caught on. Legs are beautiful. Jewelry and makeup deeply confused me, so I generally steered clear. Trends in girl's clothes seemed so silly and awkward to me, and I had no desire to spend all of my allowance to look dated in a few months. So many dollars have been spent and some wasted (due to wrong sizing!) on Ebay, where I used to spend hours searching for vintage Pendleton wool coats, equestrian boots, jodphur boots, cycling caps, anoraks, Icelandic sweaters, and whatever else I could not find at the mall. Thank god for the internet!

Fast forward to today. I'm now in my mid-twenties and although I've gotten the business casual look down and I managed to build a wardrobe feminine enough that satisfies my husband, my true sartorial passion lies elsewhere. Right now, I'm mostly loving the new Americana look dominating the blog scene. But it has made me sad to not be able to find a 60/40 mountain parka, Crescent Down Works jacket, Barbour Bedale jacket, vintage wafflestomper boots, etc. that will fit my small frame and feet. Accessories are much easier to come by, though. Because of this, that may be a main focus of this blog. I realize that this is a trend, and all trends eventually face universal disdain and crawl into a dark hole to die, but I strongly feel that there are some useful takeaways. Hopefully, we as consumers will learn to buy less, but buy high quality goods that will last a lifetime. I support buying American and buying handmade within practical considerations, even if it means shelling out many more cashdollars. I suspect that I will also blog about items made overseas, if only to highlight a particular design that doesn't currently have an American-manufactured analog. So please bear with me on that.

Another hope is that the market will be more responsive to our subset and make clothing and accessories for women who aren't "girly" and want simple and/or classic makes. I am seeing this spirit in women-founded labels such as Keep Company, Marais USA, and Current/Elliott. This is also reflected in well-established clothing lines like Steven Alan and APC, but I don't like to obsess over items I would not be able to afford on a regular basis. (Even if my salary rose accordingly, I doubt I would ever feel comfortable dropping $100 on a shirt.) I had high hopes for the LL Bean Signature line, but the majority of their women's line is mired in insipid designs. I feel that over the past few years, American Apparel has done a splendid job of branching out from t-shirts and undergarments to introducing mostly affordable unisex classic pieces, such as the fitted oxford shirt. People like to ride the hipster backlash by giving them a hard time for their salacious ads and heavy 80's inspiration (self-congratulation much?), but I think they are missing out.

My goal in contributing to this blog is to show other women with similar tastes that they are not alone. For me, it was such a relief to have found a kindred spirit in Lesli Larson, of Archival Clothing. I find myself commenting on many of her posts and Flickr photos, and I'd like to continue that conversation that with others. Also, don't hesitate to peruse the handful of sites on my blogroll. I find all of them singularly inspirational and fundamental to the maturation of my style. Yes, even the nerdtastic Cool Tools- when it comes down to it, the practical rules over flashiness.
